The Hon. Patricia M. Murphy is a judge for the Ventura County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2006 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
She is a registered Republican.
Judge Murphy received her bachelor's degree from California State University, Northridge. She went on to earn her J.D. from Southwestern Law School in 1987.
Murphy began her legal career at the Ventura County District Attorney's Office as a deputy district attorney. During her twenty-year tenure there, she matriculated through the ranks, serving as a senior attorney for the D.A.'s Major Crimes Unit, and a supervising attorney for the Family Protection Unit. Then, in 2002, Murphy advanced to chief assistant district attorney, the second highest position at the D.A.'s office. She held that position until her appointment to the Superior Court four years later.
During her time on the bench, she presided over the criminal division. Judge Murphy also served as an assistant presiding judge and as presiding judge.
She received the 2016 Oxnard Knights of Columbus Public Safety Award and was named the 2019 Judge of the Year by the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association.
As a judge, she has been described as being knowledgeable, fair and unbiased, and is not afraid to reverse herself even citing case law in such instances. She also enjoys negotiating settlements.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time outside and hiking with her family.
