The Hon. Patricia Guerrero is an Associate Justice for the Court of Appeal for the Fourth Appellate District in California. She was initially appointed to the Superior Court of San Diego County by former Governor Jerry Brown on May 21, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Gonzalo P. Curiel to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. She was then elevated to the Fourth District Court of Appeal by Brown in 2017.
Guerrero earned a B.A. in legal studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994. She then received a J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1997.
She began her legal career as an associate at Latham and Watkins. She worked in its San Diego and San Francisco offices between 1997 and 2013, serving as a member of its Environment, Land, and Natural Resources Department. She was promoted to partner in 2006, a position she held at the time of her appointment to the bench.
Guerrero briefly left Latham and Watkins in 2002. She accepted a position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, where she worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the General Crimes Section for one year.
As a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County, Guerrero presided over criminal and family law matters, eventually serving as Supervising Judge for the Family Law Division. She has been awarded the Judicial Officer of the Year Award by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (2017) as well as the San Diego Family Law Bar Association (2017).
She was born in Brawley, California and was raised in the Imperial Valley.
