The Honorable Patricia Garcia

The Hon. Patricia (Patti) Garcia is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in July 2003, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas Ashworth.

Garcia earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of California, San Diego in 1982. She then continued her studies, completing a teaching credential from San Diego State University in 1984. She taught for four years while also pursuing a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law. She completed her studies there in 1989.

Garcia began her legal career practicing family law with Mitchell, Keeney, Barry & Pike in 1989. Then, in 1993, she moved to Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek. During her seven-year tenure there, she headed its Family Law Department, specializing in high-asset complex divorces, prenuptial agreements, as well as custody and support modifications.

She worked in that capacity until her appointment as court commissioner for the Superior Court of San Diego, where she was tasked with presiding over child-support cases.

Her memberships have included San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association, California Women Lawyers, the California Judges Association, the San Diego County Judges Association, the National Conference for Community and Justice, the San Diego Lawyers Club, San Diego MANA, as well as Kids’ Turn.

While not on the bench, Garcia enjoys paddle boarding, playing tennis, traveling, and reading.

Garcia speaks Spanish fluently.
