The Hon. Nicholas S. Thompson is a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was appointed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on July 21, 2008, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Richard E. Behn.
Thompson attended Western State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a J.D.
He began his legal career in 1982, working as an attorney in his own private practice. He specialized in defense work, business litigation, family law, and corporate formations. Four years later he joined the Office of the Public Defender as a deputy public defender. He served in this position until 1999, devoting most of his time to dependency law. He then joined the Office of the District Attorney, where he worked as a deputy district attorney. He served as the Local Prosecution Liaison to the Joint Terrorism Task Force. He also worked in the Environmental Unit and the Gang Task Force.
Thompson is a veteran of the Iraq War. He received the Bronze Star for his leadership of a psychological operations detachment of a covert task force during the invasion of Iraq. He also served in Bosnia, after which he was awarded the Joint Commendation Medal for his work with foreign military intelligence units and psychological operations.
He has lived in Orange County, California with his wife and their two children. He volunteered with the Sea Explorer program and the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets as a child. He ran track and cross-country during high school and college.
He is registered to vote as a Republican.
