Judge Miriam V. Valkenburg - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Miriam V. Valkenburg is a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. She was elected to the bench on August 30, 2016.

Valkenburg earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida in 1994. She spent the next few years working as a probation officer for the Salvation Army Correctional Services, a parole officer for the Florida Department of Corrections, and an intelligence analyst for the United States Department of Justice before completing a J.D. at Stetson University College of Law in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Valkenburg began her legal career as an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit. She then entered into private practice, working as an associate at Isaac & Zwirn as well as a partner at Valkenburg & Velez.

Her memberships have included the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Florida Justice Association. She has also been involved with the Goldburg-Cacciatore Criminal Law Inn of Court, the Hillsborough County Canvassing Board, and the Tampa Bay Trial Lawyers Association, and she has volunteered as a pro bono attorney for the Family Justice Center, Are You Safe, and Bay Area Legal Services.

She is a recipient of the Raymond Fernandez Award from the HCSO Hispanic Advisory Board (2018), the Appreciation Award from the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association (2017), the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015), and the Civic Award from Are You Safe, Inc. (2014).
