Judge Mike Jacobs - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mike Jacobs is a judge for the DeKalb County State Court in Georgia. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Nathan Deal in 2015.

Prior to his appointment, Jacobs was a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives, where he represented District 80 (2005 to 2015). During his tenure there, he was chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Oversight Committee. He also sat on the Transportation, Insurance, Juvenile Justice, and Budget & Fiscal Affairs Oversight committees.

Jacobs earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in 1997. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Georgia School of Law in 2003. He served as the Executive Articles Editor of the Georgia Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Jacobs entered into private practice. He started as an associate at Alston & Bird, Krevolin & Horst and Hall, Booth, Smith & Slover. He then opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner, specializing in consumer bankruptcy and debtor-creditor litigation.

His memberships have included the Atlanta Bar Association, the Chamblee Area Business & Professional Coalition, the Merry Hills Homeowners Association, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He also sat on the Georgia Code Revision Commission as well as the Board of Directors of the Anti-Defamation League (Southeast Region), the Red Clay Democrats, the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia, and the International Association of LGBTQ+ Judges.

He is a recipient of the Allen Thornell Political Advancement Award from Georgia Equality (2010) and the Outstanding Service to the Stonewall Community Award from the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia (2019).

When not presiding over legal proceedings, Jacobs enjoys traveling, Broadway musicals, and karaoke. His wife, Evan, is a speech-language pathologist in the DeKalb County School District. They have three children. Jacobs identifies as Jewish and is considered to be the first only LGBTQ trial judge in DeKalb County.
