Biography

The Hon. Michael S. Berg is a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, San Diego Division. He was appointed to the District Court in 2018. He filled the seat vacated by the death of the Hon. David Bartick (deceased).

Judge Berg received his B.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1978. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1981.

Prior to his appointment to the District Court, Berg spent his entire legal career as a criminal defense attorney and was certified as a Criminal Law Specialist. His areas of practice included internet, white-collar, domestic violence, drug, sex, child abuse, and federal crimes.

His memberships included serving as the chairman of the California Board of Legal Specialists for the State Bar of California and president of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Board of Directors. Berg was also the past-president of the Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club.
