The Hon. Michael R. Deems is a judge for the Superior Court of Butte County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 27, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Steven J. Howell.
Deems earned a B.A. from California Lutheran College. He then completed a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law.
He began his legal career in private practice in 1985. He first joined Nagle, Krug and Winters as an associate. He then worked at Moss and Enochian from 1991 to 1995, Sinclair and Hill from 1995 to 1998, and Stewart, Humphreys, Burchett and Molin from 1998 to 2002. Then, in 2002, Deems became a managing partner at the Law Offices of Deems and Keller, where he practiced until his appointment to the bench. Over the course of his legal career, he represented insurance companies in personal injury claims and insurance policy matters.
Deems has served as president of the Butte County Bar Association.
