Biography

The Hon. Michael P. Candela is a judge for the Superior Court of Butte County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on April 8, 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas W. Kelly.

Candela earned a B.A. from California State University, Chico. He then completed a J.D. from the University of San Francisco Law School.

He began his legal career as a research attorney for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in 1987. The following year, he joined the Office of the District Attorney of Butte County as a deputy district attorney. His time there was brief. He quickly transferred to the Office of the District Attorney of Marin County, where he served for two years before starting his own private practice as a sole practitioner.

Then, in 1991, Candela joined Gagen, McCoy, McMahon and Armstrong. He worked there as an associate for four years, eventually moving to Drath, Clifford, Murphy, Wennerholm and Hagen in 1995.

Candela returned to the public sector in 1996. He became a volunteer research attorney for the Office of the Public Defender of San Joaquin County, where he served until he was selected to become a deputy public defender in 1997. He held that position for one year before returning to the Office of the District Attorney of Butte County as a deputy district attorney.

He has served on the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission.

He is registered as decline-to-state.

Candela was born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Chico, California. He spent most of his childhood in foster homes.
