The Hon. Michael J. Gaffey is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jack Gifford (Ret.).
He is registered as a Republican.
Judge Gaffey received his B.A. from Loyola Marymount University in 1978. After working briefly as a substitute teacher in Southern California, Gaffey continued his education, earning his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1984.
Gaffey worked as a deputy district attorney for the Alameda County District Attorney's Office right out of law school. Ten years later, he joined the Santa Clara County D.A.'s office, in the same capacity. At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2005, Gaffey was serving as the supervising deputy district attorney for the Santa Clara County D.A's Administration Department. During his time a deputy district attorney, Gaffey worked with the gang suppression units and helped to prosecute gang-related crimes.
He also served on various committees relating to administrators, gang prosecution, and forensics with the California District Attorneys Association.
While on the bench, Judge Gaffey has served as the supervising judge for the Criminal Court for Alameda County.
Judge Gaffey was born in San Francisco, California, where his grandfather, Michael Gaffey, served as the police chief in the early 1950s.
