Judge Michael J. Colona - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Michael J. Colona is an associate circuit judge for the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court (Division 24/29) of Missouri. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Mike Parson on October 18, 2019, filling the vacancy created by the appointment of the Hon. Madeline Orling Connolly to circuit judge.

The 22nd Judicial Circuit includes the City of St. Louis.

During his judicial tenure, Colona has presided over a misdemeanor and minor civil jury trial docket.

Prior to his appointment, he was the managing partner at Colona & Gentle, where he had practiced since 2012. He began his legal career as a civil litigator in St. Louis in 1994 before beginning a criminal defense practice at The Stokely Group in 1999. Colona also served as a former state representative for the City of St. Louis (2008 to 2016) and was an appointed municipal judge for the City of Holts Summit and the City of St. Louis.

He has taught as an adjunct professor of Criminology at the University of Missouri.

Colona received a B.A. in political science from Truman State University in 1991. He went on to complete a J.D. at Saint Louis University School of Law in 1994.

He was admitted to practice in Missouri (1994), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri (1994), and Illinois (1997).

Colona has served on the Missouri Bar Board of Governors as a Diversity Representative for the Eastern District of Missouri and is also a member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.

He and his husband, Dennis, reside in south St. Louis.
