Judge Michael J. Butler - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michael J. Butler is a judge for the Pima County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jan Brewer on May 9, 2013.

Prior to his appointment, Butler was a senior partner at Butler, Oden & Jackson, a law firm he formed in 2009. During his tenure there, he specialized in real estate and business litigation in addition to transactional matters and general business consulting. Before that, he spent time as a partner at Butler & Associates (2007 to 2009) and Collins Butler (2003 to 2007) as well as a sole practitioner (2000 to 2003).

Butler earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arizona in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law in 1993. As a law student, Butler worked as a paramedic and an EMT instructor. He was nominated Tucson Paramedic of the Year.

After graduating from law school, Butler began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Fred Mortone of the Arizona Supreme Court. He served in that capacity until 1994, at which time he entered into private practice. He spent the next several years working as an attorney at Brown & Bain (1994 to 1996) and the Law Office of George Feulner (1996 to 2000).

His memberships have included the Volunteer Lawyers Program, where he offers legal help to low-income clients. He has also served on the Board of Governors of St. Michael’s Parish Day School.
