The Hon. Michael D. Washington is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on August 29, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the death of the Hon. George W. Clarke (deceased).
Washington earned a B.B.A. in accounting from San Diego State University in 1990. He briefly worked as an accountant before continuing his studies at California Western School of Law, where he received a J.D. in 1994.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Washington worked as a deputy public defender with the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego County from 1994 to 2013. He decided to pursue a judicial career after traveling to East and West Africa with Lawyers Without Borders.
Washington has also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Law.
He is a recipient of the Richard D. Westbrook Memorial Award for Outstanding Trial Advocacy as well as the California Western School of Law Faculty Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Service.
He attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, California, where he lettered in golf and tennis.
Washington is registered as a Republican.
