Biography

The Hon. Michael B. Harwin is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the Van Nuys Municipal Court in 1986 by former governor George Deukmejian. He was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court in 1989 by then-governor Deukmejian.

Judge Harwin received his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University. He went on to earn his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1971.

Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Harwin was serving as a Los Angeles County Superior Court commissioner, a position he started in 1982.

Before becoming a court commissioner, Harwin practiced business litigation and served as a criminal felony defense attorney for 10 years. He also worked as a district attorney.

He has served as the assistant dean at Loyola Law School and the associate dean of the University of West Los Angeles School of Law.

During his time as a Van Nuys Municipal Court judge, a disgruntled man, who had been in Judge Harwin's courtroom facing misdemeanor charges, took a deputy city attorney hostage at gunpoint. The man was ultimately shot and killed by a bailiff after a gun battle had ensued.

In 2008, he was named the San Fernando Valley Bar Association's Judge of the Year.

Judge Harwin, who was born in Brooklyn, enjoys watching the LA Clippers and collecting antique radios.
