The Honorable Michael A. Cowell

Los Angeles Superior Court, Department N

The Hon. Michael A. Cowell is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 1993 by former governor Pete Wilson.

Cowell immigrated to Canada from war-torn Calcutta with his parents when he was a toddler. They had fled the country as Japanese fighter planes were attacking the area during World War II.

While in Canada, Cowell attended the University of Montreal, where he received his B.A. in 1963. After graduating from college, Cowell immigrated to the United States at the age of 24. He would attend the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 1969.

After graduating from law school, he joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office in 1969.

After three years with the P.D.'s office, Cowell entered into private practice in 1972.

Then, in 1976, Cowell became a part-time court referee for the Juvenile Court. This would ultimately lead to a court commissioner position, where he would serve for 16 years before being appointed to the bench in 1993.

Judge Cowell is a member of his church choir, and also enjoys playing the piano. He caps off each week with a cigar and a glass of wine.
