The Hon. Melissa J. Bellan is a judge for the County Court at Law No. 2 in Dallas County, Texas. She was elected to the bench in 2018.
Bellan earned a B.S. in psychology and government from Sweet Briar College in 2000. Then, in 2003, she completed a J.D. at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Bellan entered into private practice, specializing in civil, family, and probate matters. She started as a contract attorney in the Law Office of David R. Gibson in 2003. She then worked as an associate at Carmody & James (2004 to 2006) and Buchanan & Burke (2006 to 2008).
In 2009, Bellan became a founding partner of Buchanan & Bellan. She practiced there until 2013, eventually leaving to start her own private practice as a sole practitioner. During this time, Bellan also worked as a litigation attorney at Jordan, Houser & Flournoy (2014 to 2016) as well as general counsel for the Dallas County Demoratic Party (2010 to 2014).
Her memberships have included the Ferguson Road Initiative, the National Board of Advocates, the Texas Bar Foundation, the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association, the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, and the Community Involvement Committee of the Dallas Bar Association.
Bellan is registered as a Democrat. She was named Volunteer of the Year by the Dallas County Democratic Party (2009).
