Judge Matthew L. Clucas - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Matthew L. Clucas is a commissioner for the Kitsap County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench on July 30, 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Clucas sat as a judge pro tempore for the district and municipal courts in Kitsap County and Jefferson County.

Clucas earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, Long Beach in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Willamette University College of Law in 1993.

After graduating from law school, Clucas began his legal career as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. During his tenure there, he prosecuted felony and misdemeanor crimes and was instrumental in developing the Adult Drug Court.

Then, in 2003, Clucas entered into private practice. He worked as a partner at Bennett Rainey Moran Gianneschi & Clucas, handling criminal defense, family law, probate, real estate, and general civil litigation matters. He worked in that capacity until 2010, at which time he joined Tolman Clucas, a mediation firm dedicated to handling family law, workplace conflicts, and neighborhood disputes.

His memberships have included the City of Poulsbo Library Board, the Marth and Mary Board, and the Kitsap County Bar Association Board of Trustees.

He is a recipient of the Professionalism Award from the Washington State Bar Association (2015) and the Humanitarian Award from the Kitsap County Bar Association (2002).
