Biography

The Hon. Matthew J. Gary is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2007 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He is a registered Republican.

Judge Gary received his bachelor's degree from California State University, Sacramento. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

Gary spent 13 years in private practice before becoming a court commissioner for the Sacramento County Superior Court in 2002. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his appointment to the bench in 2007.

On November 2, 2015, Judge Gary accidentally struck and killed a bicyclist, Margaret Bengs-McReynolds, as she was crossing Fair Oaks Boulevard in Carmichael, California. Two days later, a report released by the CHP determined that Bengs-McReynolds was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
