Judge Mathew P. Harter - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Mathew P. Harter is a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. He was elected to the bench in 2008 and retained in subsequent elections.

Harter received a B.S. in business administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1988. He went on to earn a J.D. from Western Michigan University, Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1994.

After graduating from law school, Harter clerked for the Hon. Gerald W. Hardcastle in the Family Division of the Eighth Judicial District Court. Upon completing his clerkship, he worked as a contract attorney for the Clark County Public Defender’s Office beginning in 1996.

While continuing in that position, he also maintained a solo practice from 1995 to 2008. In addition to his private practice, Harter served as an arbitrator with the District Court for four years beginning in 2004. He remained in private practice until his election to the bench.

Harter has presided in the Family Division of the Eighth Judicial District Court.

From a civic standpoint, he has served as a leader for both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, coached girls and boys basketball with the Clark County Parks & Recreation, as well as served as a Little League Baseball coach.

His memberships have included the American Judges Association, Judicial Family Institute, Nevada District Judge Association, and the State Bar of Nevada.

Harter, who is a native Nevadan, was born in Reno. He and his wife have eight children.

He enjoys cross-training, baseball, four wheeling, target shooting, attending church, and spending time with his family.
