Judge Mary M. James - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Mary M. James (Ret.) was a judge for the 3rd Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Marion County. She joined the bench in 2003. James retired in 2020.

On the bench, she presided over criminal and civil matters as well as jury trials and pretrial hearings, and her caseload included complex commercial, construction defect, civil enforcement, constitutional challenges to state laws, family law and probate, and criminal cases.

Prior to her judicial career, James worked as a partner in private practice and was a former assistant attorney general and attorney-in-charge with the Oregon Department of Justice for eleven years.

She also spent time as a special prosecutor with the Washington County District Attorney’s Office and taught Intensive Trial Practice and Pretrial Civil Litigation as an adjunct professor at Willamette University College of Law. James, who mentored law students at the law school, had an award for mentoring excellence created in her name in 2013.

She received a B.A. in business administration from Portland State University. James went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1981.

She was admitted to practice in Oregon (1982), the United States District Court for the District of Oregon (1983), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (1997).
