The Hon. Mary Ann Murphy is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She has served as a judge for the Superior Court since 1993.
Judge Murphy received her B.A. from the University of New York at Stony Brook in 1975. She went on to earn her J.D. from California Western School of Law in 1978.
Prior to becoming a Superior Court judge, Murphy had been a sole practitioner for seven years. Before that, she worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney for three years.
During her time on the bench, Judge Murphy served as a moderator for the best practices meetings for the Central Civil Judges since the meetings began in 2005.
Murphy was also the associate editor for the Civil Procedure Before Trial practice guide for six years. The publication, which was co-authored by the Hon. Robert I. Weil (Ret.) and the Hon. Ira A. Brown, Jr. (Ret.), is a comprehensive pretrial procedure guide.
Her judicial committees have included the Judicial Council Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee, the Civil Court's Efficiency Team, the Civil and Small Claims Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Media Committee. Judge Murphy also served four terms on the Supreme Courts Executive Committee.
Judge Murphy has written several articles for the Advocate Magazine on the subject of courtroom budget cuts.
