Judge Martha L. Luft - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Martha L. Luft is an acting justice of the Suffolk County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. She was initially elected to the Suffolk County Family Court in 2006. Then, in 2010, she was designated to the Guardianship Part of the Suffolk County Supreme Court.

Luft earned a B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1974. She then completed an M.A. from Columbia University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

She began her legal career as an associate at the defense litigation firm Mulvehill & O’Brien in 1984. She left the firm three years later, accepting a position as an assistant attorney general in the New York State Office of the Attorney General. Then, in 1996, she returned to the private sector, this time as a partner at Twomey, Latham, Shea & Kelly.

Her memberships have included the Suffolk County Bar Association and the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association. She has also served on the Middle Country Library Foundation Board, the Long Island Occupational and Environmental Health Center Advisory Board, the North Shore Jewish Center Board of Trustees, and the Business Committee of the Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages.
