The Hon. Mark G. Nelson, Sr. (Ret.) was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the Citrus Municipal Court in 1997 and was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court in 2000 as a result of the court's unification. He retired from the bench in 2018 and was succeeded by the Hon. Danielle R.A. Gibbons.
Nelson took the unconventional approach of obtaining his J.D., which he received in 1984 from Western State University College of Law, before obtaining his bachelor's degree. He would then attend California State University, Fullerton where he graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1989.
In 1984 Nelson practiced as an associate at the Law Offices of Arthur J. Jaffee. That same year, he joined the District Attorney's Office where he served as a deputy district attorney from 1984 to 1988. After leaving the D.A.'s office, Nelson became a sole practitioner in Pomona, California for the next two years. He then left the private sector to join the Public Defender's Office in 1990 as a deputy public defender and would remain in that capacity until his appointment to the Municipal Court in 1997.
