Judge Mark D. Wilson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Mark D. Wilson is a judge for the Monroe County Court in the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Wayne M. Miller (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, Wilson was a special assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of Florida and the chief assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Sixteenth Judicial District. During his twelve-year tenure as a prosecutor, he handled public corruption cases and served as the legal advisor to the Monroe County Grand Jury. Wilson also spent four years as an appointed special federal prosecutor, holding the distinction of being the first assistant state attorney in the 16th Judicial Circuit to have ever received the appointment.

Prior to relocating to the Florida Keys, he was a judicial clerk to the Hon. J. Michael Eakin with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. In addition, Wilson taught as a visiting assistant professor of law at Pennsylvania State University and Widener University. He taught criminal law, criminal procedure, advanced criminal procedure, and evidence.

Wilson received a B.A. from Rutgers University. He went on to complete a J.D. at Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson Law and an LL.M. at Yeshiva University, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

Before pursuing his legal career, Wilson worked as a state trooper with the Wyoming State Highway Patrol. He also spent four years enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 2nd Battalion (Airborne); the 187th Infantry Regiment at Fort Kobbe, Panama; and the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Wilson was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge for service in Operation Just Cause. After returning to active duty to serve in Operation Desert Storm, Wilson was honorably discharged, holding the rank of Sergeant.

At the time of his appointment, he lived in Key West with his wife and daughters.
