The Hon. Lynn R. Kotler is a Justice of the New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the First Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the seat in 2018.
Her judicial career began in 2010 when she was first elected to serve as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York. During her tenure on the Civil Court bench, Justice Kotler held assignments in both the Bronx and New York County Criminal Courts and was also designated to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court in 2015 by the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York.
She is a registered Democrat.
Justice Kotler graduated with a B.S. (1983) and an M.S. (1985) in education from the University of Connecticut. While at the University of Connecticut, Kotler played collegiate field hockey as a starting goalkeeper. She held that position when the UConn Field Hockey team won the NCAA National Championship in 1981. Then, while pursuing her master’s degree, Kotler served as an assistant coach for the program. She went on to earn a J.D. from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in 1991.
Before joining the bench, Kotler spent the bulk of her legal career in private practice. During that time, she held positions with various law firms and also served in solo practice. As such, she maintained a general civil litigation practice with an emphasis on matrimonial and family law, real estate, wills and estates, and personal injury cases. In addition to her law practice, she also provided pro bono legal assistance to individuals who could not otherwise afford legal representation and served as a small claims arbitrator with both the New York City Small Claims Court and the Better Business Bureau.
Kotler also served as a special master to the Hon. Richard Braun with the New York County Supreme Court.
In 2012, Kotler received the UConn Club’s Red O’Neill Award in recognition of her professional achievements.
