Biography

The Hon. Loretta Murphy Begen (Ret.) was a judge for the Stanislaus County Superior Court in California. She was originally appointed to the Stanislaus County Municipal Court in 1993 and was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court as a result of the court's unification in 1998. Begen retired from the bench in 2018 and her vacancy was filled by the Hon. Carrie M. Stephens.

Begen received her bachelor's degree from Loyola Marymount University in 1980. She went on to earn her J.D. from Southwestern Law School in 1984.

While in law school, Begen worked as a paralegal at the Law Offices of Miriam Lavenda Latt from 1980 to 1982. She also served as a judicial assistant to the Hon. Stanley N. Barnes (deceased), a Senior Judge with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1982 to 1984. After graduating from law school, Begen served a year-long clerkship for the Hon. Robert R. Beezer (deceased), also a Judge with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Then, in 1986, after a brief stint in private practice, Begen joined the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office, where she worked as a deputy district attorney until her appointment to the Municipal Court in 1993.

During her time on the bench, Begen served as a Presiding Judge of the Court.
