Judge Lon S. Arend - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Lon S. Arend is a judge for the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida in Manatee County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2016, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Scott M. Brownell (Ret.).

The 12th Judicial Circuit includes DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties. Arend has presided over the Manatee County Circuit Criminal Felony V Division, the Drug Court, and the Veterans Court.

Prior to his appointment, he spent twenty-one years as an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit (1995 to 2016). At the time of his departure, Arend was the chief assistant state attorney. He also held the positions of deputy chief assistant state attorney, Homicide Division chief, and Felony Division chief.

He received a B.S. from Florida State University in 1990. Arend went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1994.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as an associate for a sole practitioner in Sebring, Florida.

Arend was born outside of Chicago and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys playing ice hockey and spending time with his family. At the time of his appointment, Arend resided in Palmetto, Florida.
