Judge Lawrence S. Knipel - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lawrence S. Knipel is a Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Civil Term in the Second Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 1998 and re-elected in 2012.

His judicial career began in 1991 when he first served as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York. He held that position until his election to the Supreme Court bench.

Justice Knipel received his B.A. from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1974. He went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Seattle Law School in 1977 and an LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1979.

Shortly after graduating from law school, Knipel joined the law firm Van Ginkel and Benjamin, where he practiced as an associate.

In 1980, he joined the New York State Unified Court System, where he served as a law clerk to the Hon. Martin Schneier with the Civil Court of the City of New York (1980 to 1982) and to the Hon. Jules Spodek with the New York State Supreme Court (1982 to 1990).

While on the Supreme Court bench, Justice Knipel presided in the Criminal Term in Kings County from 1998 to 2002. In 2013, he was named the Administrative Judge of Civil Matters for the Second Judicial District by the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, former Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. In addition to serving as Administrative Judge, Justice Knipel has also presided in the Commercial Division as well as over a Medical Malpractice Early Settlement Part in Kings County.

Beyond his judicial responsibilities, Knipal served as a past president of Congregation Temple Beth Emeth v’Ohr Progressive Shaari Zedek.

He resides in Brooklyn with his wife Lori Citron Knipel, who also practices as an attorney. Away from the bench, Justice Knipel enjoys running and playing the guitar.
