The Hon. Lawrence P. Riff is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in 2015.
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Riff received his B.A. from the University of Michigan. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1982.
After graduating from law school, Riff joined the Southern Pacific Transport Company as an associate. In 1985 he became an associate at the law firm of Lane Powell, PC and was subsequently named a partner in 1989. He practiced for the firm for eleven years before becoming a managing partner for the Los Angeles law firm of Steptoe and Johnson, LLP in 1997. While at the firm, Riff practiced complex toxic tort cases that had resulted in personal injury and death. He remained in that capacity until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2015.
During his time on the Superior Court, Judge Riff served as the assistant supervising judge at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.
He has written several articles on a variety of subjects ranging from toxic tort litigation, how to avoid high-tech abuse in the courtroom, to insight into the dynamics of the family courtroom.
