Judge Lawrence H. Ecker - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lawrence H. Ecker is a Justice of the Westchester County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New YorkANCHOR TEXT. Justice Ecker was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2011 and certificated to the seat in 2017. He also served as a Justice of the Putnam County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District after being appointed to the position by former Governor David Patterson in 2010.

His judicial career began in 1988, when he began serving as an acting village justice of the Tarrytown Village Court. Then, in 1990, Justice Ecker became a village justice for the Irvington Village Court. He remained on the bench there until his appointment to the Supreme Court.

He received his B.A. from Syracuse UniversityANCHOR TEXT in 1968. Ecker went on to earn his J.D. from Brooklyn Law SchoolANCHOR TEXT in 1972.

He first worked as associate counsel in the Criminal Division of the Legal Aid Society beginning in 1972 and held that position until entering into private practice in 1974. It was at that time, he became a named partner at Ecker and Ecker LLP. While at the firm, some of his areas of practice included personal injury, matrimonial, family law, real estate, business, corporation, and administrative law matters. Ecker maintained his practice while also serving as village justice.

Justice Eker was the past president of the Westchester County Magistrates Association, the Yonkers Lawyers Association, and the Greenburgh Hebrew CenterANCHOR TEXT. He also served as the founding member and vice president of the Justice Brandeis Westchester Lawyers Society and as chair of the Westchester County Board of Ethics.

Some of his other memberships have included the St. John's Riverside Hospital Board of Trustees, the New York State Bar Association, the Westchester County Bar AssociationANCHOR TEXT, and the Westchester Women’s Bar Association.
