The Hon. Lauren Weis Birnstein is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in March of 2002.
Judge Weis Birnstein graduated cum laude with her B.A. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles. She went on to earn her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1977.
After graduating from law school, Weis Birnstein worked for one year at the Office of the Attorney General for California before joining the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. She served as a prosecutor for the D.A.'s office for 23 years, starting out as a deputy district attorney. Weis Birnstein subsequently was appointed Acting Head Deputy D.A. in 1993 of the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Division. In 1995 she was named Head Deputy District Attorney for the same division and was serving in that capacity at the time of her election to the Superior Court in 2002.
Judge Weis Birnstein has taught on the subjects of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault as an instructor for the California District Attorneys Association. She also served as a speaker from 1993 to 1997 for California State University, Fullerton.
Her memberships have included the Los Angeles Bar Association, the League of Women Prosecutors, and the Association of Deputy District Attorneys.
She was named Prosecutor of the Year in 1999 by the Century City Bar Association.
