The Hon. Laura E. Duffy is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on December 24, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. William R. Nevitt.
Duffy earned a B.S. from Iowa State University. She then received a J.D. from Creighton University School of Law.
She began her legal career as a law clerk for the Office of the Public Defender of Douglas County in Nebraska. Then, after completing law school, she joined the criminal division of the United States Department of Justice. She worked as a trial attorney from 1993 to 1997, serving in the money laundering section as well as the narcotics and dangerous drug section.
She then began working in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. During her nineteen-year tenure with the Office of the United States Attorney, she advanced from an assistant U.S. Attorney to the deputy chief of the General Crimes Section. She was eventually nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California in 2010. She held this position until her appointment to the bench.
She is registered as a Democrat.
She was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She was one of four openly LGBTQ U.S. Attorneys at the time of her appointment to the Office of the United States Attorney.
