Judge Larry S. Helms - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Larry S. Helms (Ret.) served as a judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Helms was elected to the bench in 2014 and re-elected in 2020. He retired on March 31, 2023.

The 10th Judicial Circuit encompasses Hardee County, Highlands County, and Polk County. Helms held assignments in Polk County and Highlands County, presiding over cases in the Civil Division and the Felony Division.

Helms earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Florida in 1971. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1974.

After graduating from law school, Helms briefly worked as assistant general counsel for Gulf Life Insurance Co. and the City of Jacksonville. Then, in 1976, he joined Stanley Wines Murphy & Helms, handling civil litigation matters in Winter Haven until his election to the bench.

His memberships have included the Cypress Gardens Rotary Club and the Winter Haven/Lake Alfred/Auburndale Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Legal Committee of the American Heart Association, the Grievance Committee of the 10th Judicial Circuit, and the Board of the Second Wind Lung Transplant Association.

Helms was born in Gadsen, Alabama. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he enjoys cooking, hunting, fishing, golfing, and reading.
