Judge Kevin V. Maltby: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Kevin V. Maltby is First Justice of the Springfield District Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker on July 11, 2018.

Over the course of his judicial career, Maltby has held assignments as an associate justice of the Northampton District Court.

Maltby earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1998. He then completed a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Maltby entered into private practice. He started as an associate at Stevenson & Lynch in Hingham, practicing family law, bankruptcy, general litigation, employment litigation, and real estate matters. Then, in 2003, he joined the Office of the Northwestern District Attorney as an assistant district attorney.

Maltby left the District Attorney’s Office and returned to private practice in 2006. He became an associate at Bacon Wilson in Springfield, handling all aspects of civil litigation in State and Federal Court as well as criminal defense in District Court. During his tenure there, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a shareholder in 2016.

His memberships have included the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Hampshire County Bar Association, and the Hampden County Bar Association (President). He has also sat on the Supreme Judicial Court’s Standing Committee on Professionalism.

He is a recipient of the Community Service Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association (2013). He has also been recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly for his work in expanding the Hampden County Bar Association’s Legal Clinic.

He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Studies at Bay Path College.

Maltby was born in Ontario, Canada. He was a resident of Longmeadow and an active member of the Twin Hills Country Club at the time of his appointment.
