Judge Kevin M. Carter - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kevin M. Carter is a judge for the Erie County Family Court in the Eighth Judicial District of New York. He was appointed to the Family Court bench by former Governor George Pataki in 2002. At the time of his appointment, he filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Michael Battle (Ret.). Judge Carter was subsequently elected to the seat in 2003 and re-elected in 2013. While on the Family Court, Judge Carter has presided over the Youth Part.

He graduated with his B.A. in philosophy from Canisius College in 1986. He went on to earn his J.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School in 1989.

Prior to his appointment to the Family Court, Carter served as an attorney in private practice, specializing in domestic relations, personal injury, criminal and real estate cases from 1991 to 1999. He then became an associate and law guardian at the law firm Sullivan, Oliverio, and Gioia. He remained with the firm until his appointment to the Family Court.

In 1991, Carter founded the Kevin M. Carter Attorney Internship Program for African American students.

He has also served as an assistant professor at Erie Community College.
