Judge Kenneth Friedland - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kenneth Friedland is a judge for the Brevard County Court in the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Lawton Chiles in 1995.

Friedland has presided over the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions. He was chairman of the Brevard County Canvassing Board and served as a Florida Bar referee and a mentor judge.

Prior to joining the bench, he was the vice president and shareholder of Severs, Stadler, Friedland & Harris, P.A., where he had practiced since 1984. During his time in private practice, Friedland handled civil and commercial litigation as well as family, probate, and governmental matters. Before that, he had worked as an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender with the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit in Broward County (1981 to 1984).

He received a B.A. from the University of South Florida in 1976. Friedland went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1979. He was admitted to practice in Florida (1980), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (1980), the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and Alabama (1980).

After graduating from law school, Friedland began his legal career as a judicial law clerk.

His memberships have included the Brevard County Bar Association and the Vassar B. Carlton American Inn of Court (past president). He has also sat as a member of the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit Florida Bar Grievance Committee.

From a civic standpoint, Friedland has been involved with the Civilian-Military Relations Council, the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program (past chairman and board member), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Brevard (Board of Directors and big brother), the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science (past president), Take Stock in Children, and the Brevard County Law Library Board of Trustees.
