Biography

The Hon. Kathleen M. White (Ret.) was a judge for the Yolo County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2003. She retired from the bench in 2018.

White graduated with her A.B. in German language and literature from Duke University in 1976. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1984.

She began her legal career in private practice. She first practiced as an associate with the Los Angeles law firm of Kadison, Pfaelzer, Woodard, Quinn, and Rossi in 1987, before then joining White and Case. While with the firms, White specialized in complex commercial and business litigation with an emphasis on bankruptcy reorganizations, insolvency, and work-outs. Then, in 1991, White founded the Chapter 11 litigation firm, Tron and White in Pasadena, California. She then entered into solo practice three years later.

In 1998, she joined the Yolo County Court, first working as a research attorney before quickly rising to senior staff attorney and then general counsel. The following year, White was named the chief executive officer of the Yolo County Superior Court. Upon her appointment to Superior Court judge in 2003, White became the first person in the history of the California court system to be seated as a judge after also having served as the Court's CEO.

During her tenure on the bench, White served as a Presiding Judge of the Court. She also served as the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court and as Assistant Presiding Judge.

Some of her judicial committees have included the California Trial Court Presiding Judges Advisory Committee, the New Yolo Courthouse Construction and Design Committee, the California Judicial Council Statewide Advisory Committee for Collaborative Courts, and the Cow County Education Planning Committee, just to name a few.

She is the founder of the Yolo County Children's Alliance. She has also served as a member of the Milton Schwartz Inn of Court and the Yolo County Law Library.

She is fluent in German, Russian, and Spanish.

In her free time, White enjoys gardening, kayaking, playing the violin, and rooting for the Boston Red Sox.
