Biography

The Hon. Kathleen A. Kelly is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was appointed by former governor Gray Davis on November 12, 2003, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Carlos Bea.

Kelly earned a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1984.

She began her legal career as a trial attorney with the Office of the City Attorney of San Francisco. She represented the Department of Human Services as well as minors in dependency trials. She then joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California, where she worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney until her appointment to the bench.

Kelly has worked as an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, teaching juvenile delinquency and dependency law.

She is a fourth-generation San Franciscan and part of a prominent political family. She is the granddaughter of former governor Pat Brown as well as the niece of the former governor Jerry Brown.
