The Honorable Katherine A. Bacal

Biography

The Hon. Katherine A. Bacal is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2008, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas C. Hendrix.

Bacal earned a B.A. from the University of Redlands in 1985. She then received a J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991.

She began her legal career as an associate with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in 1991. After working with the firm for nine years, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher closed its San Diego office in 2000. She then joined Baker & McKenzie as an associate, eventually becoming a national partner in 2003. She held this position until her appointment to the bench.

Bacal has served as president of the Lawyers Club of San Diego. She has also been a member of the Louis M. Welsh Chapter of the American Inns of Court.

She is a recipient of the Belva Lockwood Award from the Lawyers Club of San Diego.

She is registered as a Democrat.
