The Hon. Julia A. Emede is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jean Wetenkamp.
Emede earned a B.A. from Michigan State University. She then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1995.
Emede began her legal career as an associate at Makoffs LLP in 1996. The following year, she joined the Law Offices of Kathryn Schlepphorst. She practiced there as an associate for four years, eventually becoming a shareholder for Schlepphorst & Emede in 2001. Over the course of her legal career, she has specialized in family law, handling dissolutions, adoptions, and court-appointed representation of children.
As a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, she has presided over the Domestic Violence Criminal Court.
She has taught Community Property at Santa Clara University School of Law.
Emede was the first lesbian to openly serve as president of the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
She is registered as a Democrat.
