Biography

The Hon. Judith M. Ashmann-Gerst is an associate justice for the California Second District Court of Appeal in California. Ashmann-Gerst was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in 2001.

Ashmann-Gerst began her judicial career as a judge for the Los Angeles Municipal Court, a position to which she was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown in 1981. She served in that capacity until 1986, at which time she was elected to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. During her tenure there, she primarily presided over criminal matters in the San Fernando Valley as well as fast track civil matters in Downtown Los Angeles. She also held assignments as the Supervising Judge of the North Valley District of the Superior Court.

Prior to her appointment, Ashmann-Gerst served as Executive Assistant in the United States Attorney’s Office since 1979. Before that, she was Special Counsel to the Los Angeles City Attorney (1976 to 1979) and Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the California Attorney General (1972 to 1976).

Ashmann-Gerst earned a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1965. She spent the next several years working as a deputy probation officer. Then, in 1972, she completed a J.D. at Whittier Law School.

Her memberships have included the National Association of Women Judges, the California Judges Association, the California Judicial Council, and California Women Lawyers. She has also sat on the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Litigation Section and the Board of Directors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers Los Angeles Chapter.

She is a recipient of the Judge of the Year Award from the San Fernando Valley Bar Association (1995), the Los Angeles County Bar Association Criminal Section (1994), and the San Fernando Criminal Courts Bar Association (1991).

When not presiding over legal matters, Ashmann-Gerst enjoys traveling, skiing, and playing golf.
