Judge Judith H. Ramseyer - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Judith H. Ramseyer is a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. She was elected to the bench in 2012.

Ramseyer has held assignments as Chief of the Clark Children and Family Justice Center. She led the center in an intervention paradigm shift towards a behavioral health therapeutic court. Ramseyer also sat on the King County Superior Court’s Executive Committee and Budget Committee.

Prior to her election, Ramseyer was the owner and principal of the Law Offices of Judith H. Ramseyer (2008 to 2012). During her tenure there, she specialized in complex commercial and family law matters.

Ramseyer earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Eckerd College (1971) and a master’s degree in mental health counseling from Seattle University (1981). She worked with adolescents and families in the juvenile justice system, helping mental health experts design and implement a program to treat juveniles adjudicated for sexually motivated offenses. Then, in 1987, she completed a J.D. at Seattle University School of Law.

After graduating from law school, Ramseyer began her legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. William L. Dwyer of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. She served in that capacity for two years, eventually leaving to enter into private practice.

Ramseyer started as an associate at MacDonald Hoague & Bayless, handling federal civil rights, federal habeas corpus, and federal death penalty cases as well as employment and personal injury matters. She then became special counsel at Heller Ehrman in 1998. She held this position until 2005, at which time she became a partner at Phillips Law Group (2005 to 2006) and of counsel at K&L Gates (2007 to 2008). While at Phillips Law Group and K&L Gates, Ramseyer specialized in complex commercial, class action, antitrust, and family law cases.

Her memberships have included the Federal Bar Association’s Pro Bono Program (chair), the King County Bar Association (secretary), the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference Committee (lawyer representative), and the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court (president).

She is a recipient of the President’s Award and the Passing the Torch Award from Washington Women’s Lawyers as well as the Excellence in Diversity Award from the Washington State Bar Association.
