The Honorable Joyce D. Hinrichs

Humboldt County Superior Court, Department 7

Biography

The Hon. Joyce D. Hinrichs is a judge for the Superior Court of Humboldt County in California. She was elected to the bench in November 2008, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. J. Michael Brown.

Hinrichs earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of the Pacific in 1980. She then continued her studies at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where she completed a J.D. in 1983.

Prior to her election to the bench, Hinrichs served as a court commissioner for the Superior Court of Humboldt County.

Hinrichs was instrumental in the creation of the Family Wellness Court, a cross-jurisdictional court with the Yurok Tribal Court. The purpose of the court is to provide innovative, collaborative alternatives for parents caught in the cycle of drug addiction, a cycle that makes it difficult for them to care for their children.
