Judge Joseph M. Tompkins - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joseph M. Tompkins is a judge for the Hillsborough County Court in Florida. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on September 17, 2021, filling a new vacancy created by the Florida Legislature.

Prior to his appointment, Tompkins was an assistant United States attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, a position to which he was named in 2018. During his tenure there, he specialized in the prosecution of civil rights violations.

Tompkins earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Ave Maria University in 2009. He then completed a J.D. at Ave Maria School of Law in 2014. As a law student, Tompkins sat on the editorial board of the Ave Maria Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Tompkins began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Thomas P. Barber of the Hillsborough County Circuit Court. He served in that capacity until 2016, at which time he became a law clerk to the Hon. Douglas Wallace (2016) and the Hon. Nelly Khouzam (2017) of the Florida Second District Court of Appeal.

His memberships have included the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and the William Reece Smith, Jr. American Inn of Court. He also sat on the Grievance Committee of the Florida Bar and the Standing Committee on Fairness & Diversity of the Florida Supreme Court.

Born and raised in the Tampa area, Tompkins is the descendant of Cuban immigrants and one of the Founding Fathers. He attended the Holy Family Academy. Tompkins and his wife have five children.
