Biography

The Hon. Jon R. Takasugi is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2008 by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Michael T. Sauer.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Takasugi followed in Robert M. Takasugis' footsteps in becoming a judge. His father, who passed away in 2009, served as a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge and also held the distinction of being the first Japanese American to serve as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. His father and his grandparents were interned at a California prison camp during World War II.

Takasugi graduated with his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1987. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1990.

After serving as a deputy public defender for a brief time, Takasugi joined the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender's Office in 1994 as a deputy alternate public defender. He served in that capacity for 14 years, until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2008.

In December of 2008, he was honored by the Japanese American Bar Association of Southern California on his appointment to the Superior Court.

In 2017 Judge Takasugi was a speaker at the U.S. Department of Justice, Central District of California's Law Day event which focused on the topic of legal lessons learned from the Japanese internment.
