The Hon. John Wayne Smith is a judge of the 161st District Court of Ector County. He was appointed to the bench in 2006 by Governor Rick Perry. He then was elected to the seat in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 and 2016.
Before pursuing a legal career, Smith graduated with a B.A. from Texas Tech University. He then went on to earn his J.D. from his alma mater in 1976.
After earning his law degree, Smith worked as an attorney in private practice for 16 years. In 1992, he was elected as the District Attorney for the Ector County District Attorneys Office. He remained in the position until he was appointed to the bench of the 161st District Court in 2006.
In addition to his services to the court, Smith is a
member of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, the Odessa Rotary Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans of America. He is currently also on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Odessa and a former member of the
Texas Narcotics Officers Association and the Odessa Crime Stoppers.
Smith is a registered Republican.
