Judge John T. Laettner - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John T. Laettner (Ret.) served as a judge for the Contra Costa County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Merle Russell Eaton.

Laettner was removed from the bench in 2020. In 2018, Judge Laettner was accused of judicial misconduct pertaining to accusations of sexual harassment. The Commission on Judicial Performance assigned a panel of special masters, who were appointed by the California Supreme Court, to serve as examiners for the Commission to investigate and report their findings to the Commission regarding the case against Laettner. In June 2019, the panel sustained three willful misconduct violations against the judge.

Prior to his appointment, Laettner had served as a Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California beginning in 1989. Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, he was a deputy district attorney with the Tulare County District Attorney's Office from 1985 to 1989. He also worked in private practice as an associate with Stammer, McKnight, Barnum, and Bailey in 1983.

Laettner graduated with his B.A. in political science from the University of California, San Diego. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

He is a registered Republican.
