Judge John R. Roach, Jr. - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John R. Roach, Jr. is a judge for the 296th District Court of Texas. He was elected to the bench in 2006.

Over the course of his judicial career, Roach has presided over felony criminal, civil, family law, and Child Protective Services cases. He has also served as the Presiding Judge of the North Texas Veterans Court as well as a member of the Collin County Purchasing Board. Roach was instrumental in developing the Felony Video Plea Program and the Mental Health Managed Counsel Program.

Prior to his election, Roach worked as the managing partner of Roach, LLP, a law firm he operated alongside his wife in Collin County. In that capacity, he represented multinational corporations, small businesses, and individuals in both civil and criminal matters. Before that, he was an attorney at Cowles & Thompson, where he defended doctors and hospitals in medical malpractice cases.

Roach earned a B.A. in political science and government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. He then completed a J.D. at St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1997. As a law student, he was an associate editor of the St. Mary’s Law Journal and a student attorney in the St. Mary’s Criminal Law Clinic.

His memberships have included the Plano Education Foundation Board, the Collin County Bond Committee, and the Junior League Family Violence Committee. He also served two terms on the Plano City Council, and he sat as the president of the Rape Crisis Center of Collin County.

He has taught commercial litigation, business law, employment law, and personal injury law as an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas College of Law.

Roach graduated from Plano East Senior High School. He and his wife, Laura, have three children and attend Chase Oaks Church. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserves, Roach was placed on active duty during Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a Crash, Fire & Rescue Specialist and an Emergency Medical Technician. He is a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the United States Congressional Veterans Service Award.

He is a registered Republican.
