Biography

The Hon. John M. Delaney (Ret.) served as a judge for the 272nd District Court in Brazos County, Texas. Delaney joined the bench in 1984 and retired in 2000. He currently works as a private mediator, arbitrator, and special judge at Delaney Mediation, Inc.
Delaney earned a B.A. in American and Latin American history from Princeton University in 1967. Then, in 1973, he completed a J.D. at the University of Texas School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Delaney entered into private practice. He worked in that capacity as a civil litigator until 1984.
His professional memberships have included the Grievance Committee (District 8A), the Special Committee on Improvement of Disciplinary Procedures, the Committee on Model Rules of Professional Responsibility, and the Disciplinary Review Board for the State Bar of Texas.
He has served as president of the Bryan-College Station Optimist Club and the Brazos County United Way; chairman of the Bryan Independent School Districts Citizens Advisory Committee on Teen Sexuality; and board member of the Dispute Resolution Center of Central Brazos Valley. He has also been a member of the Rotary Club of Bryan, the Law Enforcement Action Partnership, and the First Methodist Church of Bryan.
A fifth-generation Texan, Delaney was born and raised in Houston. He has lived in Bryan since 1973. During the Vietnam War, Delaney joined the United States Navy, where he served as a communication officer on an amphibious ship.
