Judge John L. Grandsaert - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John L. “Jack” Grandsaert is a judge for the Superior Court of San Mateo County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on December 2, 2004.

Grandsaert earned a B.S. from the University of San Francisco in 1974. He then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1977 as well as an LL.M. in taxation from Golden Gate University in 1982.

He began his legal career as an associate at Hunt & Hunt in 1977. He practiced corporate law, specializing in tax matters.

Then, in 1984, he left the private sector, accepting a position as a deputy district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Riverside County. He served in that capacity for the next three years, one of which was spent as a special assistant U.S. Attorney with the Office of the United States Attorney.

Grandsaert transferred to the Office of the District Attorney of San Mateo County in 1987. He served there as a deputy district attorney until his appointment to the bench.

Over the course of his judicial career, Grandsaert assembled a team to establish the Veterans Treatment Court, a court specifically designed to help veterans complete probation and receive treatment.

He has been an active food delivery volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul.

He is registered as a Republican.
